Conveniently, the Bosch cooktop we have, with five burners, has three control circuit boards, one for the two left burners, one for the two right ones, and one for the center. The center board will be replaced when the repair guy comes back in two weeks as the part needed to be ordered.
I say conveniently as it has meant that we still have the use of four out of the five burners.
If you'll recall we redid our kitchen in the summer of 2013. In our new kitchen we got a bunch of new appliances.
Well, the first one to fail is the Bosch induction cook top. The center burner has a flashing symbol on it that alternates from the letter U to the number 1 where the number 1 is the right vertical bar of the letter U. Given this behaviour, the burner is inoperable.
One tip I found on line was to power reset the thing, so I went to the circuit breaker in the house where this is connected and shut it off. I then turned it back on again and still the flashing U-1-U-1-U persisted.
I called Bosch support and the lady there was very helpful - the one year warranty had elapsed, however, she said she would speak to her manager to see if the repair-man charge could be covered by Bosch. Yesterday morning I received an automated email from Bosch advising that the repair-man would be coming on Thursday between 8AM and noon and that the person would call either the previous evening, or that morning, to provide a more specific time. Later yesterday morning I received a call from the Bosch support person I had spoken to and she told me that yes, Bosch would take care of the fees.
We paid a lot of money for this appliance, so I am pleased that we are getting this treatment.
So the backsplash is now in, the photos below do not have the grout in yet, but since these photos were taken the grout has been applied. There will be one more photo spread once the electrical is all complete and then the kitchen renovation is done.
There is a board on the counter.
So the counter is in, as is the new sink, the shallow cabinet, the missing door, the handles for the drawers, just a few things left before it's done. Tomorrow morning a guy will come to install the backsplash. Wednesday this coming week, the electrician is coming to finish up the electrical work. Following that, pretty much done.
So it looks like our kitchen renovation will be wrapping up this week with the arrival of the counter this morning. There are still a number of small things that need to get finished...
So the counter is not in yet. On this end, the living room side, the counter will over hang so that there is some knee room while sitting on the stools.
So we have a functional kitchen now that the plumbing, electricity and appliances are all in place, but there are still some odds and ends that need to get done in addition to the counter and backsplash. Note that all of the little green pieces of tape are there are a temporary measure to facilitate the opening of the cabinet drawers and cupboards.
The oven, cooktop, fumehood, sink - all functional.
The sink, new light fixture above it, dishwasher, electrical outlets - all functional. Note that the dishwasher is not fixed in place, it is loose and will need to be solidified.
The fridge, the potlights in the ceiling - all functional. Note that when I took this photo, the fridge is still covered, inside and out, in the wrapping material used during shipping. Since this photo was taken, all of that has been removed.
The fumehood, cooktop, electrical outlets - all functional. Note here that under the upper cabinets there is some framework in place; it will hide the lights that will be put in place that will light up the counter tops. Note also that there is a door missing; for whatever reason the company that manufactured our cabinets forgot this door; it will come later.

It is not easy to tell from this photo, but to the left of the upper cabinet that is to the left of the sink, there is a small gap between that cabinet and the beam along the ceiling. A very shallow cabinet will be put in that place to finish off that part of the kitchen.
So on Friday the cabinet installer came and installed all of the cabinets except for the fume hood part that he can only install once he knows the specs that dictate how high the fume hood should be from the cook top.
Coming in from the side door we can see the window and in the far corner of the cabinets, that is where the dishwasher will go.
Looking back we can see the big square where the wall oven will go, and the gap in the upper cabinets to the left is where the fume hood piece will go.

We found out on Friday that the cabinet installer would come back on Saturday, and he spent almost all of the time building the boxes that would fill out the top of each cabinet to join it to the ceiling.
Here is more of the finishing work. Oh, and our appliances arrived on Saturday also, so here you can see the fridge in its new home.
Our dishwasher came with this EnergyGuide which shows that the one we picked is below the low end of the scale in terms of efficiency and cost of operation.
The cabinet installer also put back our original sink and connected it in addition to installing the kick plate beneath all of the cabinets.
Today the electrician, plumber and the cabinet maker all showed up with the task of installed all of the remaining appliances, and to finish up making it a fully fledged operational kitchen. What will remain after today is to get the counter and to have the backsplash installed.

The outcropping to accommodate the fridge has been more decorously finished at the top and the hallway was painted.
The hallway was painted. It looks in these photos to be the same colour as the living room, but I think they are two different colours. It is difficult to tell because the quality of light is different in the two rooms.
This vent used to be piped up through the supporting wall we removed, they have now capped it.
This vent used to heat the kitchen, and now it will heat the kitchen in a slightly different spot.
I forgot to take photos of the kitchen progress last night after Wednesday's day of work. They painted the living room wall and the hallway on walls that have been affected by the renovation. They installed the vent where the fume hood will go. They put a new hole in the ceiling on the kitchen side of the beam for another light that will shine down on to the counter. They painted the door and window frame pieces that they will be installing today. They plugged the vent in the basement that used to feed air into the second floor through the wall that was removed.
Today they will do a bunch of small individual things that will be simpler to share by photo tonight.
In other news, sales of pocket knives have changed in proportion to the number of sea gulls that cavort among the lichen found in coastal freight train exchange zones.
So yes, the floor is in. I failed to include a photo that shows they haven't yet completed the floor installation into the gap where the fridge is going, but they'll be doing that today. They will also see about installing the door frames and window frames and a few other smaller touch-ups. Tomorrow the cabinets are being delivered and the installation will take place on Friday with the appliances being delivered on Saturday.
C-Ling was also wanting to get in on the action, so here you can see her disembodied legs.
It isn't that long from now that we'll be moving our stuff into our new kitchen, so I thought it was about time that I showed our temporary kitchen setup.
As you come down the stairs to the basement you come first to see this.
Under the stairs we've packed it in.
This is the view into what used to be the laundry room, now it is the laundry room / temp kitchen.
If you walk in a bit and look left, on top of my small indoor green house is this stuff.
Then if you turn around, the clothes washer and dryer are supporting this stuff.
Taking a step back we get another angle that includes the laundry sink.
If we go deeper into the basement, into the furnace area, we can see that the storage shelves that once held clothes for future sizes of our kids now holds a lot of kitchen stuff. A lot of the clothes that used to be here are now in the kids' bedrooms.
These six white boxes and the brown one on top hold all of our crystal and glass ware - these were taken out of the china cabinet seen in this post.
It got to where I needed to place two spare pieces of wood between to preexisting supports to allow for a place for these boxes of spices.
