9999999999999999.99

What is it about the marketers out there, the price point decision makers, the planners and retailers and discount merchandisers that all insist that items be sold at 4.99, 5.99. 9.99, 11.99, 19.99 and so on?

Are we all daft that we do not realize that 4.99 is really 5 less a penny? That 19.99 is 99.95% of 20 and so for all purposes is effectively 20?

Isn't it a whole lot simpler for us to do mental arithmetic if we saw whole numbers rather than have to make the translate of each one to be the next higher whole number?

What is easier?
A: 3.99 + 5.99 + 11.99 + 21.99?
B: 4 + 6 + 12 + 22?

Boycott all of the stores that sell things at these absurd prices and support only those that sell at whole number values.

What stores have you seen that don't use ".99"?

Ah yes but your eye sees the 3 first before the .99 and it's first impressions that count.

Plus from a woman's point of view if she buys a pair of shoes for say $49.99 and feels guilty about it, when asked she can say 'forty-something can't quite remember what now.' Sounds much better than $50.

Not that I'd do that. ahem.

lol

Stores that don't use .99 and other absurd amounts are usually independents... it's funny how it is. I like Italy for the mere fact that taxes are included so I don't have to think about tax while I'm buying.
