Is a red herring really red?

Often it is used as a figure of speech to indicate a topic or direction that seems significant but is of really no consequence. I wonder how the herring (the red one) feels about that? How you would like it if you were being used to indicate matters of little or no consequence?

Serendipity is exactly that.
