That was the sound I heard last night as I was monitoring a customer's system for a script that is still running.
I leave the family room to look into the living room to see what made that sound and hear what sounds like rain hitting the glass of the patio door only it isn't raining outside. I turn on the lights and look closer and see that there is a hole about the diameter of a pencil in the glass and it is slowly shattering in place. My wife is upstairs putting the kids to bed, she also heard the sound, but I went upstairs to let her know what was the result of that sound.
She called her parents who recommended we call the police, so we did, they came about half an hour later, looked inside and out for a pellet (they believe it was a pellet gun that was used), filled out a report and assured us that if this was an ongoing neighbourhood problem, they would know, that whoever did this is probably long gone, they can't investigate further because there were no witnesses.
That patio door is a double-pane glass and it was only the outside glass that was penetrated and damaged. This morning it is still in place, I would have thought it would have fallen.
Today I will be calling my insurance company and a few different window/door companies to find out what they can do and about how much it would cost.
Nice way to start the weekend!

well, it can only get better. right?
In fact, it did get better. The window/door/glass repair guy I spoke to explained that it is a thermal crack, not a pellet gun. He explained how it could happen and I read up on line a little bit and that seems a whole lot more likely than a pellet gun. So we can clear our minds of any neighbourhood criminal activity, but we still have to get it fixed.
charming :/
a few years ago i was helping with a yard sale at work and i got popped by a pellet. hurt like the dickens but at least it didn't cost me any money or possible insurance increases.
Glad to hear it was hopefully not a pellet and that no one was hurt.
