JIA Update

On Friday last week my wife brought C-ling to the rheumatology department for a subsequent checkup after a new flare had begun amonth ago in the ring finger of each hand. More joints were found to have been effected, including her right ankle. Now it is called Juvenile Idiopathic Extended Athritis as oligoarticular no longer applies.

She is going to be tested this week for her ability to tolerate methotrexate and will likely start receiving it in a few weeks via weekly subcutaneous injection.

She is in good spirits and is not suffering from any pain, however, the joints affected are swollen and their flexion and extension are limited. We have to do physiotherapeutic exercises to help those joints return to normal as much as they can given the arthritis. These exercises do hurt C-ling a little bit, but it is a necessary evil to prevent permanent joint damage or limb disfigurement due to local abnormal growth rates.

Poor kid, hope the medication works.

Amen to that. Any chance she'll grow out of it?

There is some probability (I don't know the odds) that her juvenile arthritis will go into permanent remission. This is obviously what we are hoping for.
