don't look at the clock

For those of you who recall I attempted to succeed at ATC school, there was a course that was given with respect to sleep. As the job entailed significant shift work they wanted us to learn about sleep to know better how to deal with the shift work.

One thing I recall that was taught was: if you wake up in the middle of the night (or in the case of shift workers, in the middle of your longest sleep), whatever you do, do not look at a clock. The reason for this is if you find out what time it is, you'll start to think about things like how much time is left before you have to wake up, and then following from that, what is on the schedule after waking up and so on.. making it harder to fall back asleep again. If you don't look at the clock, don't figure out what time it is, your mind is not activated and it is more easy to fall back asleep.

I have put this into practice and have found it to work as described.

Funny you should leave this post. My dog woke me up at 3.45 this morning. I looked at the clock hoping it was 1 or 2 o'clock because then I would have heaps more sleep time. As it was I only had one hour of what became a restless snooze.

D gets bothered when he wakes up and can't tell what time it is. I will suggest it to him, but I suspect it may not help.
