You, or maybe poor reception.
Some people do not do well on the phone.
It could be he was talking very quickly on the phone for fear of me hanging up on him because it is kind of like a cold call. Likely it is a combination of him talking too fast, my having a poor phone, and my own hearing feeling the effects of age.
I do not think I am hard of hearing at all when I am with people, but I have been noticing time and again that when I am on the phone, I have a harder time understanding people. I think I'll pay closer attention to see if it is mostly on my mobile phone, and if it is, I'll finally bite the bullet and get myself a new one.
