switching seats
So, I get on the aircraft that is taking me from LGA to TPA; I am in seat 20A and as I approach my seat I see that 19B and 20B appear to be a couple who are separated, so if I take 19B, the couple will be together in 20A & B. 19B is a middle seat.
I say to them both, you two are a couple, right? They both answer yes; so I tell the woman who is in 19B that she can have my seat in 20A. She says no way, you wouldn't do that, and mentions that it is the middle seat (with a look on her face indicating it is the abhorrent middle seat). I say, yes, please, I'll switch seats with you.
She a second and third time refused on the basis that this is too kind. I continue insisting and eventually she acquiesces. She is so effusively thankful and grateful, it's like I'd just given her the larger part of my kidney.
Really, it is not a big deal; I am not a big man and so occupying the middle seat for a short (two hour) flight is really not an issue for me.

im not a big man either but it would freak me out. id be very unconfortable the whole time.
Kindness is just that rare in some people's lives.
ghost: I don't freak out so easily, but I can appreciate that what comes easily to one may not come easily to another.
zhoen: it is a sad thing if kindness is that rare.
I'm with you Phil, the middle seat isn't that big a deal. However, I do prefer the aisle seat so I can stretch out my legs if need be.
If it is a flight to Australia, I prefer the aisle seat. If it is any other flight, I prefer the window seat so I can lean against the bowel of the aircraft to sleep.
question...did they offer you a drink or two for your "kindness"?
