pedestrian irreverence

There are often two police cars on Stanley just south of Ste-Catherine with the officers standing at the corner, apparently just hanging out, looking for stuff to happen.

Normally I am very aware of them, but not today.

As many of us do in this city, we occasionally disregard the traffic lights when crossing streets - we look to see if there are cars coming and if there are none, we cross. Well, clearly this is illegal for safety reasons.

Today I got the pleasure of interacting with these police officers as they proceeded to give me a 41$ ticket for having disobeyed the traffic signal.

Of course I am totally culpable as I was well aware as to what I was doing. I just need to pay closer attention.

Is that closer attention to obeying the traffic rules or closer attention to making sure there are no police about? It's annoying having to pay money like that and getting nothing in return.

Both. Part of the fee I have to pay is an amount that goes to victim assistance. So it isn't totally nothing in return.

I've had a couple of warnings, when I needed to wake up. Easy to be distracted and lulled. Nothing like being stopped by the police to startle one into alertness.
