Say goodnight to 2013

We had our big party last night; we celebrate the arrival of New Year's Eve at midnight on the 30th of December. Years ago we found that our various circles of friends had all different plans for New Year's Eve, so we decided to throw a party the night before. That first one was a resounding success so we've had the Pre-New-Year's-Eve-New-Year's-Eve-Party ever since.

There were some new people and some who have been to every edition; in total 39 people came over in the evening, most of whom stayed to ring in the New Year's Eve at midnight. A generally good time was had by all (as far as I could tell).

I did a survey during the party asking the following questions:

What was the top new story of 2013?
A. Quebec Values Charter
B. Nelson Mandela
C. Lac Megantic
D. Senate Scandal
E. Rob Ford
Other

The Quebec Values Charter news story came in first with Nelson Mandela a close second. An 'Other' comment was about the election of Pope Francis.

Not that it would be a resolution for the new year, but if you were to do one of the following in 2014, which would you pick:
A. Eat Healthier
B. Become more active
C. Focus on self improvement
D. Look for a new job
Other

Becoming more active was the runaway winner on this one. A few of the 'Other' comments were learning financial responsibility, learn guitar, run for the hills and improve their life/work balance.

I asked a third question about any big plans for 2014, including the possibility of:
A. A big vacation
B. Moving
C. Renovation
Other

The vacation was the runaway winner and no one who was at the party is moving in 2014. A few of the 'Other' comments include small vacation (rather than big one), winning a big lottery, getting a new car and an incremental improvement of the kitchen.

I was really looking for a way to purposefully engage with each guest so as to have a conversation with them but to also ask if they would help in a fundraiser I am also doing. Fortunately I was able to raise a commitment of 200$ of which 50$ was paid that night. Thanks to all who helped out, it is very much appreciated.

I'm down for "other" as well.

That was really clever of you to have a survey,it can get a conversation rolling between people who may have nothing in common though it sounds as if the conversations may have become very political.

I hadn't realised the political scene in Canada was so interesting.
