If boat then island

So for our annual May Long Weekend where we go away with two other families and rent a large house we are considering this one. The tricky part is that it is on an island and the only way to get to it is by boat. None of us have any meaningful boating experience though in my youth I have spent some time in boats and am not uncomfortable with the idea of guiding one. In these days of GPS mobility it is even easier. Renting the boat may put this property outside of our budget.

The island (with the house) are also for sale. If you check this link you'll get some nicer photos. So we are debating - what if next year the property has sold and is no longer available, we will have lost this opportunity. So does that mean we bite the bullet and spend more than we would have normally?

We could rent a small boat that would take multiple trips to get us to and from the house with our stuff and our food. Or, we could rent a large boat and in one (or maybe two) trips, do the same thing. The small boat might be around 400$ to rent for the weekend while the big boat would be in the neighborhood of 1100$. It looks like from the marina to the island should be about 15 minutes. Having the boat gives us the advantage to explore the 1000 islands area a little bit from the water side.

Alternatively, apparently, there is a water taxi service we can hire, but that would mean we get ferried over to the island on Friday, are stuck there, and then ferried back to land on Monday with no escaping the island in between. This would mean that we'd need to bring with us not only our clothes and food for the whole weekend, but all sorts of things to keep us, and especially our kids, occupied for the weekend. I haven't been able to find on-line any information about this; it could very well be as expensive as renting a boat. The advantage is that we wouldn't have to worry about the welfare of the boat or the driving of it.

One of the six adults of us is managing the contacting of the various home owners from whom we are picking to rent the house, so she will get some more information about this place, in addition to information about some others we are looking at as alternatives.

You are in the hands of the gods when it comes to boats. If it gets windy and the water is choppy and especially if you get a few cold days then boating becomes very uncomfortable, after one trip no one will want to get back in the boat regardless of how big it is. Our family has had some really fun times camping on an island not far from here but we've also had one or two memorable horror trips as well.

If it were just me and my dear one, dropped off for a week on an island sounds lovely.

Do not bring a copy of John Sayles movie Limbo with you. Well, don't watch it at all, really. The three people wind up stranded on an island in Alaska, and at the moment when we are about to find out if they will be rescued or murdered, the screen goes white and it's over without resolution. Total mind fk.
