strap your belt loops

I would be remiss if I didn't mention something that is notable that has just happened that is historically without precedent in American politics. Joseph Biden, the 81 year old 46th president of the US, performed poorly due to geriatrich cognitive failure during a one on one debate with the Republican candidate and past president felon Donald Trump three weeks ago. On Sunday this past weekend Biden posted to social media that he will no longer be running for the position of President in this November's presidential election, even though he had accumulated all of the electors necessary to be given the nomination at the Democratic party's convention happening near the end of August. He succumbed to the pressure that his peers and poor polling indicated that if he was to continue, it is possible Trump would win.

What is historically notable about this is that it has never happened before that someone so close to being nominated bows out. Biden endorsed his vice president, Kamela Harris, a 59 year old black woman to be the person nominated for Democratic presidential candidate. It is not yet fully certain that she will be the new Democratic party nominee, but it is extremely likely that she will be; and if this Democratic party is able to rouse their electors, especially in those swing states, she could be both the first woman president and the first black woman president.

All preliminary media accounts show that the Democratic party is now excited and even more engaged as with this new, younger and dynamic Harris in a position to be nominated, it gives a sharp contrast with Trump who himself is also an old man at 78 years old. Harris will need to pick her vice president and though I have heard a few different names as suggested candidates, the one I think would be best would be Mark Kelly, senator in swing state Arizona. He was an astronaut and a navy pilot and represents a border state with Mexico so has some insight on the border troubles there. His navy experience can counter Trump's VP JD Vance who brings up his own military experience often to counter Harris's lack thereof and his border experience and knowledge can help formulate whatever policy may be needed going forward.
