headphones
So, with this new job I've been at now just longer than a year, I have been taking public transit, and have generally been walking in the city for 10 minutes at a time, twice a day.
I notice that a large portion of the people who are also out and about have headphones on listening to whatever they are listening to.
I have a mixed impression about this. While I fully support the idea that everyone has the right to do what they'd like within the law; I also know that by closing one's self off from the world this way, they could be missing out on something.
What that 'something' is, most of the time, is very little. But every once in a while, the people who are closed off in their own little world will miss something.
I've debated entering into that world of being closed off with my own music, but I haven't yet made the plunge.

For the very short time that I took up jogging I would listen to music. I need a beat to move to otherwise I can't seem to stay motivated. However, I considered this practice a little dangerous because you become less aware of what is around you,so I took to wearing an earphone in one ear only so I could hear the music yet still be alert to all that was around me. Maybe that would work for you as well.
My D uses it as a way to discourage unwelcome intrusion from random strangers. A method of privacy.
What Zhoen said... I'm 100% aware of surroundings while listening to music. It's more of a crutch for anti-social behaviour for me. What I'm missing is the potential human interaction that would probably be good for me now and then. But I don't mind missing out on that.
Mesh, that's pretty much exactly what I was referring to about missing 'something' - the potential human interaction. I'm torn about missing it willingly, or missing it sadly.
