a gross indignity : an instance of insolent or contemptuous speech or conduct

I had a conversation recently where someone told me her ex used to be deceptive with her and insult her, regularly. I cannot recall ever having insulted anyone, in fact, I'm not even certain I would know how.

I do not understand why she or anyone would stay with someone who treats people that way, but I can never know the full story.
